Ce vei face

Let's explore this gem of a wildlife refuge right here on the edge of our city! You'll meet dozens of native plants, trees, and animals and their native American uses, like the red twig dogwood which provided a smoking mixture ("kinnickinick"), medicines, cordage, toothpowder, and a tonic tea!

We'll explore the ecology of this floodplain and wetland, and how it's used by fingerling salmon as they avoid predators and grow. We'll also follow the Willamette River bank on a lesser-traveled trail, and see an art installation in the woods.

Thanks to citizen activism, this area was saved from being a dumping ground and became Portland's first city-owned urban wildlife refuge.

We'll look for raptors like eagles and osprey, listen for songbirds, and scope out water birds. And keep an eye out for possible other wildlife like coyote, deer, and beaver.

Its about a 2 mile, 2 hour exploration on flat ground. Please bring water and good shoes for hiking. See ya on the trail!
Other things to note
This is an easy hike, mostly on dirt paths and also on the paved Springwater Path, with little to no elevation gain.

I love leading interpretive hikes and sharing a great wealth of knowledge about the special trees, herbs, shrubs, and animals that make the Pacific Northwest so unique. I especially focus on their traditional indigenous uses. An example would be how red alder trees were (and are) used to make red dye for fishing nets, to tan leather, and carved into spiritual masks. It also has a critical role in the ecosystem and in sustainable forestry.
I love to meet new people, and easily connect. I've lead mushrooming field classes and interpretive hikes through Meetup for 4 years here. I supervised and led field programs for Seattle's big zoo for 3 years, taking programs to all 39 Washington counties. I led over 2,000 hikes in 11 years full-time at Hawaii Nature Center, as well as beach cleanups, stream restoration projects, and tree plantings.

This was a pleasant experience! We hiked around a beautiful area and got to learn about local plants and animals. David is friendly, down to Earth, and approachable. I would definitely recommend this hike for beginner naturalists, or people who want to learn some of the plants and animals of the area!
