Ce vei face

We'll explore an intertidal ecosystem in the heart of Kota Kinabalu City, discovering rich flora & fauna living in the mangrove & marsh of Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre.

After a quick introduction to the history & geography of this wetland, I'll lead you along the boardwalk and try to point out the many unique plants & animals living in the mangrove swamp. At the bird-watching hide, we'll stop for a few moments to observe the many water birds living in the marsh, an unique habitat in the city. At the view tower, we have the opportunity to see the city over the canopy of mangrove forest, a green jewel in KK City rehabilitated from destruction decades ago. Now above the trees, we get to appreciate mangrove life from a different perspective.

Along the journey I'll share interesting stories about creatures encountered, especially on their unique adaptations to survive in the harsh habitat of mangrove. Also I'll highlight the importance of wetlands for the migratory birds, creatures that connect the world.

If you feel adventurous, we may walk onto a mud trail and experience how it feels to live in a mangrove swamp. Along the trail we'll come across a nursery, where you may try to plant some mangrove seedlings picked up along the walk, and learned about the unique reproductive biology of red mangroves.

Back at the centre, you may wash off & leave or continue to explore by yourself
Other things to note
Please wear bootie if ready to get wet & muddy. Alternatively bring additional footwear or be prepared to walk on barefoot. Animal sightings vary with tidal & weather conditions.

Join me & my naturalist friends to explore the intertidal ecosystems in Kota Kinabalu City, and discover the many extraordinary creatures living within.

I am a biologist based in North Borneo, with extensive ecological research experience in various ecosystems of tropical Asia from study & work with National University Singapore, Smithsonian's Forest Global Earth Observatory (ForestGEO/CTFS), Harvard Summer School, Imperial College London, etc.

Committed to conservation, I hope to reconnect more people with nature through unique nature experiences, with emphasis on community-centred research, education, conservation programs.

Also look out for more extraordinary programs I'm developing with the Konexer/NatureCollective, indigenous communities, citizen science groups & local authorities, to help document & conserve Nature.
