Ce vei face

We will be walking in and around Humayun's Tomb and trying to explore its past or history. The tomb of Humayun holds an important place in the history of Delhi. It was arguably the grandest monument to be constructed in Delhi in the sixteenth century by the Mughals and was situated south of the city founded by Humayun. Its grandeur, architecture, planning as well as landscape weren't just meant to signify the idea of heaven for the resting Mughal Emperor Humayun, it was also a symbol through which the Mughals, especially under Akbar participated in the complex process of history making in Delhi as was done by the long list of rulers of Delhi before them.

This walk will explore the ways in which the Mughals thought of this monument and the processes and ideas that may have informed them. Of course, we will also explore how this monument carved out a space for itself in a city which had a rich architectural heritage already by the time the Mughals arrived.
Other things to note
Humayun's Tomb is a ticketed monument so you'll have to buy your own tickets. You can reach here by car/cabs as well as Delhi Metro (get off at Jor Bagh metro station gate number 1 on yellow line and take an auto rickshaw to the tomb). Paid Parking is available here.

Hello, I'm Karil and I am a research scholar with specialization in History. I was born and brought up in Delhi and have covered (and am still covering) the remains of Delhi's past in the form of architecture and monuments left behind. I also write blogs on Delhi and history in general as well. I have also undertaken heritage tours and walks across Delhi and really enjoying exploring heritage and spaces in groups.

Unde vei fi

The Humayun's Tomb is probably the grandest of Mughal monuments built in Delhi before the foundation of the city of Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi) in the mid 17th century. The tomb and adjoining areas form a huge necropolis where alongside the Mughal emperor Humayun, many important figures of history find a resting place. The gardens of the tomb are a special treat as is the magnificent red sand stone used for the tomb's construction.
