In my class, you will not be just watching or eating, but if you wish, you can challenge playing a role of ceremony host, or also free to ask the reasons of my ceremony or kimono behaviors, or try these elegant actions yourself with my support.

Not being so strict about rules, but instead I will try to help you feel a sort of mindfulness within the calm, inspiring ambiance I create in my tea room.

First, I will explain the whole flow of the tea ceremony at anteroom using explanatory material for several languages including English, Chinese, French, Italian, Korean, Spanish, and German, but you do not have to memorize all.

Then we will enter the tea room.
Please sit in your comfortable position.(crossed legs are also OK) .
Japanese-style chairs are also available.
Of course, you can try sitting on your knees!
I will offer Japanese sweets, and I will bring several items from
Mizuya ,and purify them with Fukusa or hot water, and make a Matcha
tea.

First you will taste Japanese sweets "Wagashi”.Then,in turn, one by
one,you will be tasting Matcha tea,but don't worry! This is the class
for beginners, anytime you are free to ask questions, redo, enjoy and
make most of the chances in the room!

When all of you have finished drinking,I will purify the tea bowl and tea scoop.
Later, the I will put the items back to Mizuya.

Want to experience the "real authentic" and cozy ambiance of tea ceremony? Then my class, with small group at old townhouse may be ideal!

I started Tea ceremony at the age of 15, after long years’ practice, given chamei, certified master title “Koyo" in 2010, by the Iemoto (Grand master) of Nara-based Chuguji-Goryu (famous Chuguji-temple) school.

I put more importance on your own concentration or mindfulness, therefore do not worry about correct behavior. Like many guests already reviewed, please appreciate in your own way the ambiance of the tea room and how we/you serve tea to each other, with less words.

Unde vei fi

Nara is often said as enough to spare 3hours just by watching Great Buddha and deer, but in fact has authentic cultural roots of Tea Ceremony, Wagashi, Buddhism and Shinto ,etc. born before Heian-era of Kyoto capital. "Kanrin-an" is located at east end of Naramachi area, which is appraised as nostalgic space for promenade & shopping.
Enjoy the traditional small ambiance (Wabi-sabi) here and feel how the people lived more than 60 years ago.

Kayoko was wonderful! She was so sweet and very knowledgeable. We learned about the tea ceremony, got to see how it’s done, and even got to try making it ourselves. She was very welcoming and caring. We left feeling like it was a unique cultural experience. We even got to take home the information we learned and she gave us postcards as a gift! Highly recommend this intimate experience tea ceremony!

Kayoko was wonderful beyond words, the warmth and genuine atmosphere she created as a host made as feel comfortable despite us going for a tea ceremony for the first time in our lives. It is definitely a highlight of our Japan trip. Just before the trip we asked her if we could wear a Kimono during the ceremony, she happily agreed and even recommended the best place to rent it. The ceremony itself is really immersive and a peak of the tea culture of Japan, and done flawlessly by Miss Kayoko. The true unique part is when Kayoko asked us to perform the tea ceremony, a once in a lifetime experience indeed. Maraming Maraming Salamat Kayoko-san! 💕

We arrived at Kayoko's lovely home for the tea ceremony as a gift from my husband and recommendation by our local friend Atsuo-son. Who knew that such a beautiful home awaited us off of the side street? Upon entering we were greeted in a traditional foyer that included an antique armoire to hold our shoes and a stone step leading up to the entryway. Although we do not speak any Japanese except to say hello and thank you, Kayoko had instructions clearly worded in a document that we could refer to as we followed along and eventually became participants in the tea ceremony. The minimalist decor was simply beautiful. Our eyes were intended for her beautiful Kimono and the equally beautiful tea preparation area. the detail and colors of her Kimono were utterly exquisite. Kayoko asked if we were ready to begin. She presented us with delicately decorated bean cakes with a small eating utensil. We were immediately transported to another era, her every move was calculated yet fluid. It was truly mesmerizing. Even if there had been other distractions I don't think either my son nor could have kept our eyes off of her hands and how she used each of the utensils. The entire experience was like an intimate dance, we even said spiritual. We are so fortunate to have had this experience with just the two of us along with Kayoko. I think this was part of what made it so special. I wasn't a tea ceremony with a large group but rather just for us. We were not expecting to be invited to serve tea as well. I think we thought it was going to only be a presentation. We were so pleasantly surprised! My son went first and gave a valiant effort. I went next and cannot begin to explain how difficult something so beautifully demonstrated could be. Being able to participate further enhanced our appreciation for the beauty of this ritual. It was like watching a prima ballerina perform a solo and being invited on stage to dance with her only to find that your feet behave like bricks when you want them to lightly touch the floor. It made the beauty of the experience even more special. To be honest I did not want to leave. I had so many questions. The environment was so soothing. If you are looking for an authentic experience while in Nara or are nearby I highly encourage to participate in this experience. Kayoko and her home are a wonderful introduction to the traditions that thrive in modern Japanese society.

My 3 friends and I really appreciated this truly unique experience! Unlike other tea ceremonies we'd seen at shops or tourist centres, this tea ceremony was unhurried, tranquil and completely personalised. Although it was conducted in the very traditional Nara style - very calm and sombre - it didn't feel too strict and we were relaxed enough to ask questions and participate in the ceremony. Kayoko provided a great service, and even walked us to the park after the ceremony, providing lots of recommendations for the rest of our day!
