Ce vei face
First, we head to the famous Window cave in Arecibo. Where we will go into the underworld of the Taínos, and experience the beautiful view of the Arecibo river valley and canyon. After a stop for some local food, our next stop is the Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Park, the most important Archaeological site of the Taíno culture in all the Caribbean. You will experience the bateyes, the rectangular courts where the Taínos played their ballgame. Finally, we head to the beach to visit Cueva del Indio. This site is located on the coast of Arecibo in a rocky outcropping that is part of a Marine Reserve. The cave and the petroglyphs it holds are a mystery to archaeologist today.
Other things to note

All my life I've been intrigued by the history of our ancestors, the Taíno! So much so that I ended up studying a masters degree in archaeology. Some years ago I was asked by the PR Tourism Co to help with a touring route of the most important sites of the Taíno culture that are accessible to visitors. The end product is called the Taíno Route, and I'm the only tour provider to offer this experience. You can choose to do the route by yourself, or you can let a trained archaeologist who is passionate about the Taínos, take you in his beautiful Audi Q7 for a ride into the past of Boriquén!

In this experience, you´ll visit three Taíno culture sites on the island. Other tour providers offer tours to the two caves, I´m the only one who is an archaeologist and can give you insights into the Taíno culture that comes from years of study and research of the Taíno history. Also, I´m the only provider to include a visit to the Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Park in Utuado, the most important site in Taíno culture in the Caribbean.

Francisco goes above and beyond in this experience. I was fortune enough to receive a personal tour which started off great in his super comfy luxury vehicle. While driving to the experiences, Francisco points out places that speak of the spirit and history of the Taino. Ask him anything about the history of Puerto Rico and he will know it! He truly loves where he was born and raised. He has a genuine passion for educating people about the culture and finds great pleasure in doing so. There is truly nothing like this tour. I came in knowing nothing and left with valuable insight. If you are interested in knowing more about the Puerto Rican culture and want real factual researched based insight, this is the experience you would want to have!

This is truly an amazing experience and I highly recommend it for everyone that loves an adventure with a history lesson from a credited source and all around great person!! Javier is very down to earth and he is happy to share his wealth of knowledge about the Tainos and the island. The ride is very comfortable and between stops he pointed out various landmarks and explained the history behind each of them. The ceremonial park and caves were awesome!! Bring your camera, lots of great views, and petroglyphs. Javier doesn’t leave any stone unturned and provides you with the full Taino experience. His passion is infectious and his tour is top notch. I will definitely be back!

This is a great way to see some of the beauty of Puerto Rico and learn about the Taínos but through the eyes of an archeologist. I came in knowing very little and came out with a better understanding of the Taíno people and what comprised their environment. Def something you should experience. Highly recommend this tour if you want to learn more about the culture.

Must do if you can afford it -- worth every cent. You will develop a keen sense of appreciation for the Taino; what an impressive people they were and the ways in which they are integral to Puerto Rican history.
About the tour: We first went to Cuevo Ventana. On the way, Javier happily obliged us on questions about the crops that the Tainos grew and what kind of agricultural economy they had. At Cuevo Ventana, Javier pointed out several petroglyph/cave etchings that you would not be able to see yourself, offered interesting geological information and several more interesting tidbits about flora and fauna in the area. Similarly, at Cuevo Indio... which we visited by the end of day.
In between, we went saw the ceremonial plazas at Caguana and got a very detailed sense of Taino society and culture. What I particularly liked is that we got a wealth of information that made the Taino people come alive (like reading a book but with actual visual cues); and many more details than what the museum there offered.
Throughout Javier was very careful to specify what were definitely known facts, what were the widely agreed upon hypothesis and what were his guesses about the questions raised about the Taino.... (and also their links with other ancient societies). It really helped to reinforce the sense that the information we were getting was genuine. And also sense of how many more interesting archaeologoical/historical puzzles remained to be solved about the Taino.
Javier himself is easy to get along with, fun and funny! In addition to whatever he had planned on sharing, he skillfully used our questions as cues to dig deeper into specific themes. He would also point out relevant sights or shared relevant facts/stories about Puerto Rican cuisine, music, and politics through the day. This gave the whole tour a great blend between structured and spontaneous.
In short -- Javier is both host and guide, and it was a really fun day!
P.s: Lunch was legit home-cooked Puerto Rican cusine at very pleasant roadside spot. Simply, yummy and quite substantial!
