Learned many interesting things from Christi's talk with us. She has a connection with Peru in that her ancestors were from China, her grandparent opened up a business in Chinatown, and her mother often visited the Dimsum place at the same location. She had to struggle with being of mixed heritage but grew from it. Many Chinese came to Lima from GuangDong province due to hardships in the home country. We learned about the welcome gate standing tall with four inspirational words translated thus: All men are created equal. This, a present to Peru by the Taiwanese government, signals the entrance into Barrio Chino where the streets are jammed with locals, tourists, sellers, and stalls that made moving from point "A" to point "B" a challenge. The Chinatown streets were paved with red bricks with names of donors. Some larger pieces depicted animals of the Chinese zodiac. The Chinese character "Double Happines" is depicted in the very center of the pedestrian mall. We wandered through Jiron Ucayali in downtown amidst a multitude of people, mostly non Chinese. We learned that Chinese New Year is celebrated with Lion Dances. We were given instruction on touring the central market across the street on our own. Our meet up location was great albeit the pollution-filled, noisy traffic conditions. Christi took us on a walk through Chinatown where we peeked into the former benevolent association headquarter which was completely under reconstruction and to the Chinese Temple where the caretaker provided answers to questions we posed. We were lucky to be given permission to enter the heart of the temple. However, there is not any records kept of the names, dates, places, or events that have transpired since the previous caretaker's demise. Sad to lose history just like that. Christi has a keen sense of navigation and a rehearsal of an organized presentation would be helpful.

Christi was a friendly guide and willing to answer all of our questions. It was also really interesting to learn about the area and history. On the down side, we weren't actually able to go into the temple (not Christi's fault), and it was hard to hear and engage in the tour at times. But we definitely wouldn't have known where to go in the area without Christi and were generally happy with the experience.

This quick intro to Chinese Peruvian culture covers a few blocks of Chinatown, a temple, grocery store, and one of the oldest restaurants. Christi is sweet and helpful. She knew a lot about the topic.
