You can get away from it all, play games, explore the well-known crafts trail, take a class, hike to waterfalls, or indulge in the local shops and restaurants of the area. Guests at Conley House are given a picture filled booklet of favorite spots to help them plan a truly memorable local experience!

Lisa Smith has been a professional vacation rental host for almost a decade. She has a background in cooperatives and brand development. Lisa also wrote a food column for seven years. A “nester” by nature, her favorite way to spend the day is cooking and baking at home. Her love for cooking is evident in the cabins.

Lisa has an active hosting style. She prides herself on speedy, thorough responses and helping guests find just the right spots to make their getaway outstanding. She runs the vacation rentals at Stay at Penland with her husband Rick and also co-hosts cabins in Southern Illinois for CornerStone Cabins and in Tennessee for Falling Water Cottage & Cabin.

- “I believe no one wants to waste a minute when they are on vacation. That’s why my first priority is to always respond to messages as quickly as possible.

Hosting to me is about providing more than a place to stay. I like to treat guests as if they are friends. Helping them craft a getaway they will never forget is the best reward and why I love hosting!”

Rick Smith is an artist/blacksmith and handles a lot of the maintenance at the Stay at Penland properties. He also operates an independent studio making work for galleries and by commission, while heading the metals program at SIUC in Carbondale, IL.

Rick was a resident artist and a coordinator at Penland School of Crafts, which is located just minutes away from the North Carolina cabins. Smith has taught workshops all over the world. His artwork can be found throughout the cabins and is also in the permanent collections of the Mint Museum, Decorative Arts Museum, Metal Museum, and the John and Robyn Horn Collection, among others.

Rick likes nothing better than to spend the day on water, sailing or fishing, and loves to travel to places all over the globe.

- “We wanted to create a space where guests could not just look at artwork, as in a gallery, but experience what it feels like to live with it. Making and curating artwork for our guests to enjoy while staying at our mountain cabins is one of the best parts of hosting!”
