The Soul Food Tour with Johnny
Welcome! Are you an enthusiast for African American history and culture? On this tour we will visit over a dozen sites, and the tour ends with a marvelous soul food meal. I will show and explain heritage sites within the historic Shaw community surrounding Howard University in northwest Washington, DC. SHAW COMMUNITY (WASHINGTON, DC) The Shaw community is named in honor of American Civil War Colonel Robert Gould Shaw of the 54th Massachusetts in the US Civil War. Howard University is named after U.S. Civil War General Oliver Otis Howard. The Shaw community emerged after the Civil War with homes, banks, churches, and more. Shaw declined with the 'uprising' of 1968, a national reaction to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The community lie in ruin until new construction or new investment until 2008. Many tourists have been unaware of these sites until the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in 2016. SOUL FOOD Soul food is the ethnic food for African Americans (Aframericans). The food holds history, tradition and celebrates our freedom. There is also vegan soul food. All the sites are within walking distance. I do not prepare the food. It is prepared by a professional soul food chef. MEETING POINT When you purchase your ticket then you will receive instructions on where to meet me to start the tour.

Exploring a Secret Fort
We're going to explore one of the true hidden wonders of Washington, D.C., a Civil War fort nestled deep in Rock Creek Park. In July, 1864, a Confederate Army attempted a surprise invasion of Washington, D.C., hoping to sow panic and drive Congress and President Lincoln from the Capitol. Confederate forces swept into the city, and fought a desperate battle among the northern defenses of Washington. President Lincoln rode over to the see the fighting, the only time in American history a president has been under enemy fire. Eventually Union forces repelled the attack, and Washington was saved. It’s considered one of the greatest what-ifs in American history: Had the Union lost the battle, most historians believe there would have been a negotiated settlement to the war, and a durable Confederate nation. We’re going to visit Fort DeRussy, one of the forts that drove back the Confederate attack, and learn the full story of how the Civil War came to Washington. Abandoned after the war and overgrown, Fort DeRussy was practically lost to history. Today, it’s virtually unknown: I grew up blocks away and didn't even know it was there. It's an astonishing, beautiful ruin in a peaceful forest grove. Other things to note Please check the weather in advance and dress accordingly. Wear clothing that you don't mind getting a bit dirty and be sure to wear comfy shoes.

You will be steering and hoisting and trimming sails, putting the theory you just learned to practical use. We limit the class size to five students to ensure that everyone gets sufficient hands-on time to learn and practice and ask questions. During this class, you'll learn basic sailing theory, terminology, and how to steer, hoist sails, trim sails, and tack. You will also have the opportunity to see many of the famous (and not so famous) Baltimore waterfront landmarks. Other things to note We're sailing on the 36' sailboat so it's not likely you'll get wet (unless it is raining). We will sail in light rain, but not in thunderstorms. Come ready to learn and have fun!

Taking Baseball 'National' Historic Walking Experience
A dramatic storytelling walk through the White House neighborhood about a pivotal moment in baseball history?! That is correct! In the summer of 1865, Henry Chadwick, the father of baseball, decided that our hard won, post-Civil War peace was the best time to transform baseball into America’s Pastime. …so he chose a group of government employees playing baseball after work on the White House Ellipse - The Washington Nationals - to help him make America fall in love with baseball and transform it into America’s Pastime. And it worked! Find out how they did it on the “Taking Baseball ‘National’” Historic Story Walking Experience. Follow Chadwick and the Nationals as they enlist the help of the President, host national tournaments against the best teams in the country, recruit the best players from New York City and, eventually make America fall in love with the game we now all know and love! We also learn about the first official segregation of the game, the founding of the first professional baseball league and how the toxic relationship between owners and players got started. How on earth are all of those things related to the White House neighborhood?! Starting at the Andrew Jackson statue in Lafayette Park and finishing on the Ellipse, you will be amazed by how the Washington Nationals of the 1860s and the White House neighborhood changed the history of baseball.

Come join us as we learn how Sousa, as well as local African American composers such as James A. Bland and James Reese Europe helped to transform the American music business into what it is today. You don’t have to be a fan of military band music or marching songs to enjoy this story. You just need to be ready to connect to the emotional journey of American composers and musicians taking their power back - the very story of American music! Our historic musical journey starts outside the Eastern Market Metro Station and ends two hours later at 310 Independence Ave. NE. Join us - You will never look at American music the same way!
