The River Lark is just a short walk from Sandpiper Lakeside Lodge and offers a picturesque route for stroll long or short. Isleham to Prickwillow: This stretch of the river heads north from Isleham Marina for almost 4 miles (6.4km) along an artificial cut, which is believed to have been constructed by the Romans several hundred years ago. Along the route there are a number of pumping stations, including the Lark Engine, which has been the main outlet for the drainage of the southern part of Burnt Fen since the mid-19th Century. Much of the land in this area has suffered shrinkage over the years, and this is particularly demonstrated when you reach Prickwillow vicarage, where the now visible ground floor rooms were originally the cellars, and where two steps previously led to the front door, now there are nine. Prickwillow is home to the Museum of Fen Pumping Engines (for more detail please see Prickwillow Engine Museum in the Local Activities Section), itself once a working pumping station now home to several engines which were used in the draining of the Fens. If you wish to continue your stroll, you can continue on from Prickwillow for a further 2 miles (3.3km) to reach the River Great Ouse. Isleham to Judes Ferry: This strech heading South from Isleham Marina for approximately 2 miles (3.3km) includes several pill-boxes constructed during World War II to defend against invasion. Along this section is also the location of a memorial to the famous Baptist preacher Charles Spurgeon who was baptised in the river on the 3 May 1850. A simple stone memorial marks this spot (E: 52.352344, N: 0.435055 or OS Map: TL 660 755), however it is located on private land and therefore not accessible, but visible from the north bank of the river. A chain ferry once crossed the river at this point, and this along with another near the weir were used for public baptisms through until 1970. Both routes on the river are also great for bird watching.

Neighbourhoods

A 15 minute walk from Sandpiper Lakeside Lodge, the small village of Isleham is located in the South-East of Cambridgeshire and the area known as the Fens. The boundaries of the village are formed by the Crooked Ditch (or Crooked Drain) to the West, the Lea Brook to the East and the River Lark to the North. Isleham is twinned with 3 international villages: Nesles in France; Magdala in Germany; and Maltov in Russia. It's name is reported to have come from the ancient Anglo-Saxon 'Gísla hám', meaning "the home of the hostages". The area is famous for the 'Isleham Hoard', more than 6500 pieces of bronze dating from the late Bronze Age were discovered in 1959 by brothers William 'Bill' Houghton and his brother, Arthur Houghton. It is the largest Bronze Age hoard ever discovered in England and thought to be one of the finest. It consists in particular of swords, spear-heads, arrows, axes, palstaves, knives, daggers, armour, and decorative equipment (in particular for horses) all dating from the Wilburton-Wallington Phase of the late Bronze age (c. 1000 BC). The greater part of these objects have been entrusted to St Edmundsbury Borough Council Heritage Service, and some are on display at West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village outside Bury St Edmunds, whilst other items are held by the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. But the town also has more recently cultural heritage - In 2015, the British Hip-Hop MC Dirty Dike released his fourth-album including the track 'Isleham Swamp'. The people in the know report that the track makes the listener want to experience the beauty of the Fens. Dirty Dike makes reference to Cambridgeshire and the Fens in several of his other tracks.

Isleham Lime Kilns

If you visit our nearby village of Isleham you might miss these well preserved remains of a thriving clunch quarrying industry which existed in the village in the mid-1800s. Built around 1860, these three kilns with the fire hearths inside are still visible. The clunch rubble was loaded in through the circular openings at the top after being carted up the ramp and the fires were fuelled with coal - with quicklime raked out from the bottom as the final product. Work at Isleham Lime Kilns ended around 1935, they now have listed status and may still house the occasional bat!
