Parks & Nature

The park is gorgeous! Absolutely stunning (our favorite place in NYC)! Fort Tryon Park’s commanding views were key to both sides during the Revolutionary War, with cannons placed along its promontories. When you visit today, you’ll be in the happiest spot in Manhattan, researchers in New England say (https://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20130822/hudson-heights/fort-tryon-park-is-happiest-spot-manhattan-study-finds). Village Voice named Fort Tryon the best park in the city in 2013. A century ago the millionaire Cornelius Billings kept a Victorian pastry of a country estate in the park, which had its own 1,600-foot driveway. These days, the spot provides unmatched views of the Hudson River and the Palisades on the New Jersey shore. The park is also the site of the annual historical re-enactment of the Battle of Fort Washington (which actually occurred on the present-day Bennett Park)

Beautiful hilly park on the Harlem river. Most gorgeous in fall when the leaves start turning and you get a clearer view of Alexander Hamilton Bridge while walking/biking over the steep hills. Mountain biking in Highbridge park: "Highbridge confounds expectations. With everything from smooth cruisers to wickedly technical “east coast gnar,” the trails provide a small but entertaining subsample of the best of the regions trails, all within the confines of the densest metropolitan area in North America. Highbridge Park itself straddles the rocky cliff band above Harlem River Drive between 155th Street and Dyckman Street, and the trails use this rocky, cliff-strewn terrain to their advantage… routing beginner riders through the shadow of hulking rock cliffs, and taking expert riders up, down and across the steep and challenging cliffside. In addition to the XC trails, Highbridge also features the Hellfighter freeride trail, with terrain that includes drops, berms, steeps, rock gardens and other challenging features built to test your skills." http://www.nycmtb.com/?page_id=285

One of our favorite places in the neighborhood. Particularly perfect on a sunny day after brunch at Indian Road Cafe. Muscota Marsh is a one-acre public park in the Inwood section of the borough of Manhattan, on the shore of Spuyten Duyvil Creek, a section of the Harlem River. It is adjacent to the much larger Inwood Hill Park. The park is notable for its views and for its ecological conservation features. Muscota Marsh is unusual for having both a freshwater marsh and a salt marsh in such a tiny area. Besides attracting plant and animal life (you can spot all sorts of birds here and even an occasional seal!), these wetlands are intended to help filter rainwater runoff and thereby improve the water quality of the river. Other facilities include a dock for kayaks and canoes, benches, and walking paths. A wooden deck overlooking the river provides views of Inwood Hill Park, the Henry Hudson Bridge, and the New Jersey Palisades.

The park is absolutely beautiful and there is so much to do there! These days, the park is home to peregrine falcons, the monarch butterfly, tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic spaces and the Little Red Lighthouse of storybook fame. For those who love history, it has a connection to the Revolutionary War.

Swindler Cove Park is one of Manhattan's least known yet most beautiful parks. Opened in 2003, the park occupies a five acre patch of land along the Harlem River that was once used as a communal dumping ground. Today, the park houses a series of ponds and waterfalls, with meandering footpaths leading to birdhouses, a communal garden, and one of Manhattan's only beaches. Swindler Cove Park's central pond flows down to a waterfall. Turtles, ducks and geese are common visitors. It houses a community garden where students from a nearby elementary school grow vegetables. http://ny.curbed.com/2012/6/14/10361700/exploring-the-harlem-rivers-little-known-swindler-cove-park#reader_comments

Dyckman Farmhouse Museum, the last farmhouse in Manhattan, is a vital cultural asset in New York City. The Museum is a visual treat for everyone who looks up and sees it perched above Broadway at 204th Street. The Dutch Colonial style farmhouse was built on this site by c. 1784. Opened as a museum in 1916, today it is nestled in a small garden and is an extraordinary reminder of early Manhattan and an important part of its diverse Inwood neighborhood.

The Cloisters is a museum, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art that exhibits selected works from the museum's extensive collection of art, architecture and reconstructed gardens from medieval Europe. Its varied installed architecture can be broadly divided between the Romanesque and Gothic styles. The actual installed cloisters installed include the Cuxa, Bonnefort, and Trie cloisters. These are surrounded by a series of reconstructed indoor chapels and rooms grouped by period, including the Romanesque, Fuentidueña, Unicorn Tapestry, Spanish and Gothic rooms. The Cloisters is situated on a hill overlooking the Hudson River and incorporates portions of five distinct European abbeys which were disassembled and shipped to New York City, where, between 1934 and 1939, they were reconstructed and integrated with new buildings in the medieval style designed by Charles Collens. The area around the buildings was landscaped with gardens planted according to horticultural information obtained from medieval manuscripts and artifacts, and the structure includes multiple medieval-style cloistered herb gardens. The Cloisters was designated a New York City landmark in 1974, and Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters were listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The only natural forest in Manhattan. If you want to see where Manhattan ends - it's right here. Very serene and with beautiful Hudson river views! Legend has it that under a tulip tree in the park Peter Minuit, Director General of New Netherland, 'purchased' Manhattan from the a band of Native Americans in 1626 for the Dutch West India Company; the purchase price being a shipment of goods worth 60 guilders. The tree, the largest tulip on the island, survived for centuries until it was felled by a storm in 1933. Until the 1950s the base of the tree under which this transaction allegedly took place was still to be seen, surrounded by a large iron fence, but as it rotted it was finally removed and a boulder (Shorakkopoch Rock) and plaque replaced it.

The Little Red Lighthouse (officially Jeffrey's Hook Light), was made famous by the 1942 children's book The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge by Hildegarde Swift, illustrated by Lynd Ward. The lighthouse stands on Jeffrey’s Hook, a small point of land that supports the base of the eastern pier of the bridge, which connects the Washington Heights neighborhood in Manhattan to Fort Lee, New Jersey. It's a beautiful area to spend a whole day walking around.

"The George Washington Bridge over the Hudson is the most beautiful bridge in the world. Made of cables and steel beams, it gleams in the sky like a reversed arch. It is blessed. It is the only seat of grace in the disordered city. It is painted an aluminum color and, between water and sky, you see nothing but the bent cord supported by two steel towers. When your car moves up the ramp the two towers rise so high that it brings you happiness; their structure is so pure, so resolute, so regular that here, finally, steel architecture seems to laugh. The car reaches an unexpectedly wide apron; the second tower is very far away; innumerable vertical cables, gleaming against the sky, are suspended from the magisterial curve which swings down and then up. The rose-colored towers of New York appear, a vision whose harshness is mitigated by distance." — When the Cathedrals were White
