Parks & Nature

My favorite place. I've been there at least 100 times. I was raised in Los Alamos, so I explored the caves as a kid. Now we take visitors there. We encourage you to visit the valley of the cliff dwellers. Bring a picnic lunch. In the summer you will have to take a shuttle from White Rock unless you get there before 9 AM. I suggest getting up early and driving down to the valley where Bandelier is located. It will take you about an hour to drive to Bandelier from The Alpaca Barnhaus.

Drive only twenty-five minutes from The Alpaca Barnhaus to this magnificent valley, a sunken caldera now a grass land for animals, especially elk. But you will also find other creatures. Take a tour of movie sites, too. The National Park Service is your host. You will find bike trails, hiking trails, fishing, cross-country skiing, and so much more. "About 1.25 million years ago, a spectacular volcanic eruption created the 13-mile wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and embraces a rich ranching history."

If you need anything, it's at Smith's in Los Alamos. Los Alamos is about one hour (maybe less) from The Alpaca Barnhaus. In addition Los Alamos has two great museums and good eating establishments.

Food Scene

Our favorite go-to place to eat New Mexican food plus hamburgers, etc. Breakfasts are great. They close at 2 PM. Taste delicious sopaipillas. This is a local favorite. Nothing fancy. Priced right, too.

New! Our favorite place to eat only 12 minutes away. Welcome to Nomad Mountain Pizza in New Mexico’s gorgeous Jemez Mountains. We take pride in making everything by hand in-house, including our hand-stretched dough, our savory and spicy sausages, our dressings and marinades, and all of our desserts down to the vanilla bean ice cream to top your apple pie off.

Shopping

Our little shop above the barn is right behind The Alpaca Barnhaus, so, of course, we will promote all things alpaca! We take only cash or checks. We're located way up on a mountaintop with no cell phone service. This is, for many, the big attraction. So we don't take credit cards. (We do have internet, cable TV, and regular phones.)

Not a museum exactly: The Jemez National Historic Landmark is one of the most beautiful prehistoric and historic sites in the Southwest. It includes the stone ruins of a 500 year old Indian village and the San José de los Jemez church dating to 1621/2.

The Manhattan Project National Historical Park In 1943, the United States government's Manhattan Project built a secret laboratory at Los Alamos, New Mexico, for a single military purpose—to develop the world's first atomic weapons. The success of this unprecedented, top-secret government program forever changed the world. 1946 aerial view of Los Alamos
