This place is an emblematic one of the area because is a bronze replica of the fountain located in the Plaza Cibeles in Madrid. The Mexican Version is located at a traffic circle in Plaza Villa de Madrid.
It was installed in Mexico as a symbol of brotherhood between the Spanish and the Mexican communities in 1980.

Initially, this place was built for working class people of the Roma neighbourhood, in contrast to those who occupied the north area. As part of the expansion plans, this square was created as a mirror image of Rio de Janeiro, located a few blocks away.
It is currently following a more middle class and Porfirio momentum, having gone through a remodelling process following the earthquake of 1985 so that it is currently surrounded by restaurants, bike paths and boutiques.

During the 20th century, the area had a reputation for being dangerous as its residents were relatively poor. Today, the area is no longer poor or dangerous, but its streets are narrower than the rest of Colonia Roma and its residents still consider themselves distinct.
