Neighbourhoods

Powfoot village is on the Solway Firth, part of the border between Scotland and England, the third largest estuary in the UK and a Special Area of Conservation. The views across the beach are stunning and the village is very picturesque for holidays with its white fishermen's cottages, listed brick built Victorian homes and Arts and Crafts style bowling pavilion. In the Summer there is a 9-hole putting green right outside the cottage. The old bowling pavilion has bowls and an outdoor Connect 4 game which can also be used. There's no formal charge for any of those activities, just an honesty box outside the pavilion where you can leave a donation. The village is small and peaceful and has a hotel with a popular bar and restaurant. There is also a golf course and a mile along the road there is a caravan park with a bar which does some bar food. The beach is a mix of sand, shingle and mudflats and a popular place for a walk when the tide is out due to its vast size. The town of Annan is less than 10 minutes drive and has a station, a selection of restaurants, take-aways, local shops and familiar brands including Tesco and Aldi. The large, popular Gretna Gateway Outlet Village is around 15 minutes drive away. The town of Dumfries is around 20 minutes drive and Carlisle is around 25 minutes drive.

Sightseeing

You can visit Caerlaverock Nature Reserve all year round, where there is a path network with raised boardwalks, a viewing platform, picnic areas, cycle racks and a viewing hide. The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust Centre is also located beside the National Nature Reserve. The mudflats and saltmarsh of Caerlaverock attract birds like barnacle geese, bar tailed godwit and knot. You can watch flocks of birds in the sky as they travel from mudflat to coastal salt marsh. Or arrive at dusk in early summer to listen to the eerie chorus of natterjack toads.
