Our favourite places

Loch Trool is three miles away from our cottages and one of our favourite spots. You can walk round the loch on a beautiful 6.5 mile trail. It's hilly, but worth it as the views all the way round are spectacular! There's several great spots for wild swimming too - ask Beth if you want directions. It's perfect for walks, swims, picnics or just for chilling and enjoying the views.

This is a great wee circular walk about 45 minutes drive from the cottages. It's only 3.5 miles but you get great bang for your buck with stunning views over to the Merrick and beyond. The walk takes you up a hill before descending to the loch where you can stop for a breather, picnic or even a swim!

Glentrool Visitor Centre is under a mile from the cottages. Here you will find a lovely wee café by the river (open Easter-October) where you can sit and enjoy the view. You'll also find three circular waymarked trails for all abilities; 1.25, 2.25, or 4.5 miles. All have gorgeous views! There is an off-road footpath from Glentrool Village to the Visitor Centre, so you can leave the car behind and do any of these walks straight from your front door, adding on an extra 1.8 miles to the distances.

The path between the village and the House o Hill pub runs for a mile and has become the “Glentrool Kindness Path” – it’s full of colourful painted rocks with images and inspiring messages. It is always lovely to walk along and can't fail to make you smile! Please add your own rocks too!

City/town information

Newton Stewart, 10 miles away, is our closest town and the place to go for supermarkets, post office, doctor, vet, pharmacy, cafes, etc. It's also a lovely wee town in its own right and worth a visit! There is a footpath along the river which is lovely for a wander down.

Portpatrick is just under an hours drive from the cottages and a great option for a day out further afield. It's a picturesque wee harbour town with some lovely waterfront cafes and restaurants. It's also the starting point for the Southern Upland Way, which heads north along the coast path. For a great day out, follow the coast path along to Killantrigan Bay, a spectacular sandy beach. Stop there for a swim and picnic, then walk back to Portpatrick - a 5 mile round trip. Finish off your day with a meal of freshly caught seafood at one of the restaurants in Portpatrick. A perfect day out!
