Neighborhoods

Uptown Stockade District Kingston’s Uptown neighborhood is where visitors will find many fine examples of America’s early colonial history. The first permanent settlement was built in 1652. Governor Stuyvesant ordered the original stockade built in 1658 to protect the early settlers from local Indian attacks. Originally called Wiltwyck, Uptown Kingston is the largest remaining example of early Dutch settlement in New York State. In 1777, Uptown Kingston’s Senate House is where the first capital of New York was established, and visitors can explore many historic sites and museums that represent that era. Uptown Kingston today is a thriving neighborhood with many shops, restaurants, museums, galleries, music venues, farmers’ markets, festivals and more. Though abundant public parking is available, the area is best enjoyed on foot. It boasts a highly diverse range of architectural details for visitors to explore, a chronology of American architecture that spans four centuries: from the early Dutch and English, to Federalist, Georgian, Greek Revival, Victorian, Romanesque, Italianate, Neo-Classical, Art Deco and Contemporary.

Food scene

Armadillo is located in the historic Rondout district of Kingston, NY. A leader of contemporary Mexican cuisine in Kingston since the early 80’s, Armadillo paved the way for a reimagining of the city’s waterfront district. The cuisine is strongly influenced by the bold flavors of traditional Oaxacan dishes, such as chicken enchiladas with poblano mole and slowly-braised pork barbacoa.

Designed as a counterpoint to the more formal Kinsley, Lola is a casual Italian spot serving antipasti (get the potato croquettes with salmoriglio, a Sicilian sauce of lemon, olive oil, garlic, and oregano), pastas, wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas, and soft serve ice cream with a selection of toppings from Swedish fish to amarena cherries. There are innovative cocktails, like the smoky Night Animal made with jalapeño-infused mezcal, St. Germain, cucumber, and lime, and the Ray Davies made with amaro, sweet vermouth, and cola extract. After emerging from shut down, Lola started a delivery program that continues to be very popular.

Frank Guido has had restaurants in Kingston for over 50 years; he’s best known for Frank Guido’s Little Italy, a family-style Italian restaurant, and Mariner’s Harbor, a seafood spot where Frank Sinatra once passed out 50-dollar bills to the staff after dining there. His latest venture, in partnership with his son Mark, is a gastropub with a diverse selection of comfort foods. So far, business has been good—especially thanks to a fabulous rooftop deck. In addition to the weather-permitting rooftop, the elegant tavern has a welcoming bar and a large dining room perfect for social distancing. The menu features everything from pub standards like shepherd’s pie and fish and chips, bang bang shrimp with sweet chili sauce, and pork schnitzel with cabbage.

Frank Guido's Little Italy It didn’t take long before our restaurant became known for traditional Italian dishes, dating back to the Old World, and family-style, celebration dining, where everyone is welcome at the table. That’s because the Guido family has deep roots in Kingston and a storied history of hospitality dating back 100 years. In the close-knit Italian neighborhood of East Kingston, where the Guido family settled, food was at the fulcrum of life’s most sacred moments and served as a bonding mechanism. That is still at the core of what we do. The Guido family—Frank and his wife, Gail, their son, Mark, cousin, Sal, and son-in-law Carmine, make sure their customers feel like family. The Guido Restaurant Group has become synonymous with excellence and unwavering devotion to quality food and drink and on-point customer service. Our waitstaff, recently voted No. 1 in the Hudson Valley, delivers your meal with a smile and cares about your experience from the moment you are seated to that last drop of cappuccino poured into your cup. Today, Little Italy stands as one of the top Italian restaurants in the Hudson Valley, continually drawing customers from Albany to Brooklyn and beyond. Our specialty is hosting parties of any size for any occasion. We have room for a small party of eight up to 100 guests for events like showers and birthday parties, graduations and rehearsal dinners and post-funeral gatherings. Our dedication to Kingston and the residents we have known for generations clearly stands out and makes Little Italy an extraordinary experience.
