My Favourite Restaurants & Places of Interest

Everything from a quick Indian take-away if you're arriving late or don't want to cook, to indulgent lunches and dinners. Also, fun places to visit.
The best Indian food around. If we're arriving late in Clare after the 1 1/2hr drive from Adelaide, it's a treat to choose from the dozen or so home-made take-away options at the front counter.

I love tasting the wine I want to drink with my lunch - and I love the amazing views of the valley from their deck. Their home-made ice-cream is worth a visit on its own. They do different flavours such as Quandong ice cream, lavender, etc, in addition to the usual favourites.

A top favourite of ours for more than thirty years. We always celebrate a special birthday or anniversary with a long lunch at Skilogalee. Sitting outside on a beautiful summer's day is very special. When the kids were little they'd happily play on the grass just near our table. The wine is fantastic, also!

Where do I begin? We chose our wedding wine here twenty-five years ago and now we bring the children back so they can play with the cat, or cricket on the grassy oval while we order a cheese platter and taste the extensive range of wines, including fortified. Their prices are very good and the range is very extensive. This is one of my absolute favourites.

Martindale Hall featured in the film Picnic at Hanging Rock and is definitely worth a visit. We always bring overseas visitors here to wander through the Victorian mansion with its preserved, beautifully furnished rooms and servants' quarters. Very reasonable admission.

How to Find Us & What to Expect

Your key will be in the door from 3pm onwards so please let yourselves in and make yourselves at home and if you need anything at all please just call Tanika (who lives near the property) on 0418 859 592. Check out is 11am on day of departure. Just leave the key in the door as you found it. DIRECTIONS AND FURTHER INFORMATION Your property is one of three separately located, secluded cottages at "WUTHERING HEIGHTS". The cottages are ‘Glen Morris Cottage’, ‘Cathy's Cottage’ & ‘Bronte Manor.' and the 80-acre property is on the corner of Roach Road & Gaelic Cemetery Road, Stanley Flat via Clare. The easiest way to find us from Adelaide is to go through the town of Clare staying on Main North Road for about 6km until you reach the Clare Racecourse on your left and a sign to Roach Road on your right with a blue sign indicating Wuthering Heights. KANGAROO WARNING: Please be aware that there are a lot of kangaroos around the Clare Valley and even more on and near Wuthering Heights. They are more plentiful during the early morning and the late afternoon/evening/night and when it’s cool or raining, so please slow down. We love our kangaroos! Turn right into Roach Road. It is a well maintained dirt road with vineyards on either side of you and the road goes up a rise doing a little dog leg at the top of the rise. Stay on the same road even though it does a little wiggle. Go down the rise on the other side and you will come to the intersection of Roach Road and Gaelic Cemetery Road. You will see a sign for Wuthering Heights on the corner of the property. The arrow on the sign points to the left for accommodation. Turn left and follow the road for a couple of hundred metres until you see a cream mud brick entrance way to "Wuthering Heights" on your right-hand side just before the rise. Turning right through the entrance gates, you will drive up an avenue of trees. REMEMBER THERE ARE THREE COTTAGES SO PLEASE ENSURE YOU LET YOURSELVES INTO THE CORRECT ONE THAT YOU ARE BOOKED INTO. The first cottage you will see is Glen Morris Cottage which is a mud brick cottage on your right between the trees. You will then see Cathy's Cottage which is a wooden cottage on your left just past the dip in the road. If you are booked into Bronte Manor, keep going along that road and straight up the rise. (Don’t turn right). Bronte Manor is at the top of the hill. The keys of all the cottages are in the door from 3pm onwards on your day of arrival so please let yourselves into the cottage that you are booked into and make yourselves at home. Please don’t arrive early unless you have pre arranged this with Management. Check out is a very leisurely 11am on day of departure. Please think of the next guests arriving after you and clean up after yourself. Do your washing up, wipe the BBQ grease off, put the furniture back where you found it and depart on time. If you break something, please just tell us, ideally before you leave so we can fix it in time for our next guests. It would be great if you could also let us know if we are running low on anything - from salt and pepper to mozzie lotion. Upon departure please leave your key in the outside of the door of your cottage just where you found it when you arrived. Fire wood We provide you with fire wood, enough for a toasty warm evening fire for the first two nights during the winter months or for BBQ wood for the first two days if you prefer (fire ban and wind factor permitting). Cottages are equipped with gas BBQs as well. Please note that in the Mid North there is a complete fire ban from November 1st until April 30th so PLEASE DO NOT BURN ANYTHING DURING FIRE BAN SEASON. The fine is huge and the consequences of a single spark in dry conditions could be disastrous. Should you need additional wood, please call us in the morning before midday and we will deliver 15 pieces for a fee of $20. (While we'd love to be able to provide more, there's a high labour cost in felling the tree and chopping the wood.) So, if you'd like more wood, please let us know in advance. Delivery will be in the evening but if you're desperate, wood bags are also available from the local service stations and, if you buy wood from the Caltex garage, a portion of the cost goes to charity. Cottages do have oil heaters and reverse cycle air conditioning as well as electric blankets. (If you are out and about please do not leave open fires burning and please ensure electric blankets are turned off). Dogs, walks, leads and basket/bedding/throw rug Enjoy, relax and have lovely walks on the 76 acres of trees and tranquility. Your dogs will love it too. We just ask that you bring their own baskets and throws to keep furniture fur-free. There is a $20 one off ‘fur fee’ for dogs regardless of how many dogs or duration of stay. (This does not apply to Air BnB Guests.) We do ask you to bring your dog’s lead as we do request your dog is restrained on a lead when approaching the alpacas and if there are other dogs nearby whilst you are walking but otherwise your dog can run free so long as you are nearby. We do have bunnies and kangaroos on the property which are great fun to chase...but you know your dog better than we do. There is not a secure fence around the entire parameter of the 80 acres of ‘Wuthering Heights’ though the nearest main road is several kilometres away. Birdlife and wildlife We have counted 42 species of birds on Wuthering Heights from woodswallows to rosellas, a beautiful selection of parrots, tawny frog mouths, white winged chuffs and many many more. There are grey kangaroos and Euros (wallabies), endangered micro bats, bush rats, hares, bunnies, lizards and more. Please drive slowly. Little parrots bathe in the puddles on the road and the lizards sun themselves on the road. The kangaroos bounce across the road (and stop in the middle of it) and there may be other guests' dogs taking a walk on the road. Wineries and eateries There are a number of lovely wineries and eateries in the Valley we would be happy to recommend. We have a list as a separate attachment and further details in your cottage. Laundry We do have a laundry for guest use but only by prior arrangement. However, in case of emergency, let us know and providing there is water in the water tank, we will hook it up for you for a load of washing. Toilet/Septic system/Water We run on a septic system so please don't flush anything down the toilet other than toilet paper. We also rely on rain water, or water that is trucked in, as required. Like the other properties in the region, Wuthering Heights is not connected to mains water so we would ask that you please be water-wise and that you don't leave taps running, and don't wash your car. (Excess rubbish may be charged for if it is considered excessive as could be the case in the event of a Wedding preparation.) Clothing and footwear Please ensure you bring appropriate clothing for the changing weather conditions in the Clare Valley. Sun hats/beanies...Our winters are cold and our summers are hot. As a general rule it is 2 or 3 degrees warmer in the Clare Valley than it is in Adelaide in the summer time and also 2 or 3 degrees colder in the Clare Valley than it is in Adelaide in the winter months. We are on 80 acres of heritage listed land and appropriate footwear if you wish to enjoy walks is a must. All the best and have a brilliant time! And, please don't hesitate to call if you need any help or information. Beverley 0411 664 787 Tanika 0418 859 592
