Sightseeing

If you fancy going on an adventure and you do not mind driving 1h40, some of the world's most famous hot springs are near Castiglione: if you check 'Le Cascate del Mulino' (Saturnia hot springs) on Instagram you'll be enchanted by the majestic rocks where these hot springs are located. This place is free to visit, but do not leave anything unattended when you go into the waters because the area is not supervised, so it's best to leave your valuables hidden in your car. This place is very much enjoyable in the summer too as it's less crowded, but perhaps don't go if it's extremely hot. The water temperature is never too hot. If you go, we recommend stopping for lunch or dinner in Scansano, which is a small town you will have to cross to get to the hot springs.

This beach has been named one of Europe's best beaches by the Daily Telegraph. And we are not surprised: it is simply enchanting, with its limpid waters and spectacular scenery. However, be prepared to walk. From the parking where you have to leave your car - which costs €7 - there is a 25 minute walk along a natural reserve to get to the beach. You can take your bike there as well (you can rent one from Easy Bike in the centre of Castiglione if you don't have one). If you're planning on bringing food, be aware that all bins have been removed since they used to attract animals, so you'll have to take your litter with you. Alternatively, there are ice cream and panini kiosks where you can get food.

Food scene

This winery is one of Italy's most famous. We highly recommend going for wine tasting, which you can do from the winery's patios overlooking the hills surrounding Castiglione. The scenery is beautiful, and the wines and cheeses are superb. Booking is not required, unless you want to tour the winery itself, for which you have to call in advance. This place is great for families and couples, as well as being a great place to take your friends. You can shop the different locally produced wines in the winery's shop, as well.

Walking is the fastest way to get around.

You can pretty much walk everywhere from the villa. Refer to the guidebook in the house to know exactly where to find the following: - the beach is in front of the house, - the part of the city centre with most shops is 5 minutes away, a pharmacy and a hairdresser are 1 minute away. - walking to the castle takes 10 minutes, - the bus stops to all destinations are 3 minutes away, - the nearest off licence for groceries is in via Fratelli Bandiera, a 2-minute walk from the villa, - the nearest supermarket is a 7 minute walk away and it's called Carrefour.

There are a plethora of music events in P.zza Orto del Lilli

Almost every other day there is something going on, so it's an area worth checking out during your evening stroll in the city centre.

When you've finished at a restaurant, ask for the bill.

In restaurants in Italy, just like in most other European countries including the UK, customers only get the bill or check when they ask for it. This is because it is considered rude for a waiter to bring it to you unsolicited, since Italians would perceive this as being an invite to pay quickly and leave the premise. In many other countries, it would be rude to not get the check promptly, but not in Europe.
