From the county's role in the "Trail of Tears" to the city's role as a trading post on the Ohio River, both the county and the city of Smithland have a rich historical heritage. Smithland was temporarily renamed "Albany, New York," in 1961 for the filming of a portion of How the West Was Won starring Jimmy Stewart, Debbie Reynolds, Walter Brennan, and many others. The movie featured several Smithland residents as extras.
