Raglan is the Waikato's great chill out spot. Drawn by its relaxed vibe, superb waves and rugged landscape Raglan is a popular destination for artists, surfers and local weekend holiday makers alike.
Raglan’s bohemian atmosphere and idyllic coastal setting makes it the perfect spot to while away an afternoon browsing amongst the boutique cafes and shops, lazing on the beach or kayaking on the harbour. While those with more adventurous activities in mind can take a short drive from the town to the beaches that make the area a surfing mecca, including Manu Bay which has one of the longest left-hand breaks in the world.
The harbour provides a tranquil spot for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding or a harbour cruise or if it’s the wild untamed nature of the west coast you’re after there is plenty of that on offer too, either on foot, by bike or on a fishing boat.

Raglan Wharf at the end of Wallis St is a working wharf, used by fishing, charter and tour boats as well as the Raglan Coast Guard. There are cafes and shops and the best fish and chips in town. Bring a rod and try your luck at fishing.

Manu Bay (also known as The Point) is a world famous surfing area. It is about 6km south of Raglan. The surf at Manu Bay came to international attention in 1966 after Manu Bay was featured in the movie ‘Endless Summer’.

Whale Bay is a coastal community nestled between Mount Karioi and the ocean, about 8km south of Raglan. Ruapuke is a sandy beach, wild and remote located 22km from Raglan. It’s dangerous for swimmers here, but popular with surf-casting fisherfolk. The drive here from Raglan is mostly unsealed past Whale Bay, though there are some fantastic views out over the wild west coast as it winds around Mt. Karioi. The trip to Ruapuke can be combined with a visit to the Bridal Vail Falls - we call it ‘round the mountain’.

Walks and Cycle Trails
The Kaitoki Walkway is very close to the house. Join it from the cal de sac head of Robertson Street and walk to the town centre around the harbour edge and through beautiful native bush (approx. 1 hour).

Close to the harbour entrance this is the best place to start a beach walk from - sometimes referred to as kite beach. It is about 4 km to walk down to the end of the beach and back.

Te Ara Kakariki is Raglan's newest mountainbike trail, located at Wainui Reserve. The grade 2 (easy) tracks, including the Ocean Trail, are perfect for families, whilst more challenging sections are great for the more advanced biker.
