This museum is a great starting point for your Gettysburg vacation. You don’t have to be a history nerd to enjoy yourself here. I recommend doing the short movie, cyclorama then the museum. Open from 8-5p but it closes earlier in winter months.

This place is a must see. The front of the store is a gift shop. You have to ask the shop keeper for a ticket to see the diorama. With a small price of admission , You get to see a birds eye view of the 6,000 acres of the battlefield. There are 20,000 painted miniatures and models which show what the town looked like in 1863. There is a narrated program with lights and sound effects that explains the events during the battle.

I really like this museum. It’s a short walk from our home. It’s a free museum but most of the relics have a price tag. You can buy relics from the Civil War, WWII, President Kennedy and the Vietnam War.

Plan out 2-4 hours for this self guided tour. It focuses on the first days battle and the grim conditions suffered by the casualties of this battle. The Cupola tour is worth the extra money. You get a great view of what General Buford saw before and during the battle.

Unfortunately, this area will be closed for renovations for 18 months. Culp’s Hill is a good alternative. You will want to spend some time driving around the battlefield. You can type Little Round Top into your GPS and it will give you directions there. You will want to park here and check out the monuments. This is the best view of the battlefield. If you took a bus tour it would have already taken you here but you can spend as much time here as you want without the bus. If you wants to see any other parts of the battlefield your phones GPS will know where to take you. If you are out touring and need a bathroom there are several public bathrooms located around the battlefield, just search bathrooms near me.

Great, fun dioramas. Museum created by two sisters. They started making civil war dioramas when they were twelve. Each diorama is hand made with hundreds of clay figures. Worth stopping in.

Go beyond the battlefield and experience Gettysburg from a new perspective. It’s the newest museum with hundreds of artifacts. It’s not just civil war history. I enjoyed seeing the Native American artifacts, the Devil’s Den rocks exhibit, meteorite and of course the immersive Caught in the Crossfire exhibit. Definitely worth a visit.

Activities

This is more of an activity then a museum. Located across the street from Lincoln diner. There is a $10 admission free but you go into an area and you pick between 3 characters, all teens. You put on Virtual Reality glasses and they start a show based on the character that you chose. (I get motion sick but the VR glasses but this VR show did not effect me.) Then you go into another area and there is another short presentation. I think you only spend around 30-40 minutes here. Its a unique, modern show that even teens should like. It's walking distance from home and make sure you eat at the Lincoln Diner. The food is good but the prices are great.

I have not made it to Mister Ed's yet but it looks like a fun family destination. It's a candy shop that is also filled with Elephant figurines, art and household goods in every size. Besides this being a great place to eat or get a beer it's located directly behind our house. Just walk across the alley and you are there. Walk down the sidewalk between the Pub and a house and go in through the front door. They have great dinner options. I've had most of their food and my favorites are Shepherd's Pie or the Irish Stew. On Friday and Saturday nights they have live bands..

The other name for this is Farnsworth House. It's a restaurant and bar. I like their food and there is outdoor seating. If you sit in the front you can people watch and there is a back table with a tall wall of ivy. There are about 30 bird houses in there and you can watch all sorts of birds coming and going. The cool thing about this house is you can still see the bullet holes in the walls from the battle.

Parking can sometimes be difficult and wait times can be 45 minutes. You will want to eat in the downstairs (basement). The decor is great, it looks like you are eating in a civil war era tavern. As long as you don't come here hungry it's worth the wait. Dobbin House has the best French onion soup. I usually get that and a roast beef sandwich.
