Walk out the door and into one of the RSPB's largest bird reserves. Excellent for moorland birds. There are lovely walks through the reserve.

It's beautiful, quieter than other parts of the Lake District, excellent walking [easy or moderate or hard walks to choose], there are steamers on the lake to get around, and all within 35 minutes or so drive from here.

It houses a very good gallery of local history going back thousands of years and includes the Romans [of course!], the Border Reivers etc. There is also an art gallery, good cafe and there is a small theatre and independent film screenings
