Newburyport is a charming harborside city with shops, restaurants, walking/bike path, and theaters.
There are restaurants with water views. Tuscan Sea Grill and Bar is a favorite. In downtown Newburyport, for America fare, Loretta is our favorite. There are a number of pizza restaurants too.

Newburyport
Newburyport is a charming harborside city with shops, restaurants, walking/bike path, and theaters.

Neighborhoods
Plum Island is about 8 miles long. Our cottage is at the north end. To get to the beach paths, take a left to the end of the street and onto the sand path. At the road you can turn left to get to the path to the Atlantic Ocean (aka Gulf of Maine) beach and also the Merrimack River beach. Turn right and there are additional paths to the ocean beach. Some paths have mats depending on the season.
The Merrimack River jetties (rock walls from the land into the water) can create strong currents. Please be aware if you swim. There are no lifeguards on the beach.
When walking to the beach, please observe posted signs and walk on established trails to limit beach erosion.
At the south end of the island you will find the Parker River Wildlife Refuge - beautiful undisturbed land with short hiking trails and bird watching. There is an admission charge when the guard is on duty. Search for Parker River Wildlife Refuge for more info.
Search online for Newburyport tide chart and moon rise times. The tide chart will identify the twice daily times for high and low tide. At low tide, there is a sand bar further south on the beach. On clear evenings we think it's fun to watch the moon rise on the ocean horizon. The sun rises at the ocean beach and sets at the river beach.
To the west you'll find the Basin, a calm body of water that fills in from the Merrimack River.
There is a lighthouse on Plum Island further north from the cottage. Search online for hours it may be staffed.
