This is where the locals go to eat. It's not "fine dining," but there's a pretty decent salad bar, a good selection of burgers and other food you would expect from a roadside grill. Their nachos are the thing that everyone raves about. Good food, live music sometimes, and a laid back atmosphere. Open 5-9pm. Closed Monday & Tuesday.

Amazing Italian food served in a historic home, walking distance from our place. the prices are quite low, the quality is excellent, and the portions are generous. Their pizza is great. As of early 2022 they did not have an alcohol license so you can bring in your own beer or wine and pay a small cork fee.

Joseph Schorp, the man who built the house and cabin on our property and the original owner, was the carpenter who built the pews in this church. It's a beautiful old Catholic church right on the town square.

Castroville was one of the very first cities to have electricity because of the water mill on site that was converted to generate power. The original hotel is still operated there and had a "facelift" in 2016.

The headwaters of the San Antonio River. Depending on how much it's been raining in the years or months before you arrive, the water might be trickling out of the ground, or flooding up. Either way, it's fascinating to see a river start by coming up out of the ground. There is a nice park and walkways nearby and it's located on the campus of The University of Incarnate Word, so it's free to visit.

Totally free, this amazing art experience uses the side of a historic church as a canvas for light and video projection that tells a story about the history of San Antonio. This is very close to the River Walk and not too far from the Alamo. If you are headed into San Antonio this is a great way to end the day. Check the internet for show times and days.

While the Alamo is the most famous, there are actually several historic missions along the San Antonio River, all within 20 miles or so of The Alamo. The park service has a map you can print and there is both a driving tour and a bicycle/hiking path for seeing four nearby missions as well as aquaducts, dams, and other historic constructions used by the friars in the early 1700s. Check the NPS website for information. https://www.nps.gov/saan/planyourvisit/upload/SAANmap1.pdf

Parks & Nature

While it doesn't show up on all maps as a road that accesses the river, Vienna St. is actually the best way to get to the Medina River. Koenig Park is between Berlin St. and Vienna. Walking down to the river is via a somewhat steep and kind of bumpy road, but it's worth the short hike. The park itself is a place where they frequently hold festivals and such, but it's not a typical park with playground equipment or sports fields.

This is a more traditional park, with playground equipment, picnic tables, and sports fields. There's also a short, but steep trail to the top of a tall hill in Castroville, sometimes call "Cross Hill" because of the religious crosses there. There is access to the river from the park and if the weather is nice there are usually people getting wet. They do charge a modest fee for using the picnic tables, handled on an honor basis. There is also a community swimming pool here and I believe you can pay a modest visitor fee to use the pool on a daily basis when it's open during the summer.

Brewery & Pub

While most small breweries are only open on the weekends, this place is open every day except Sunday and they open at 10 am! So if you're headed out for a day of exploring, you can still drop in and get a growler fill for your picnic later on. They serve a limited menu of food items, but the menu seems to grow every time I stop in. Lots of tables, board games, and a super friendly staff and great craft beer.

Not a brewery or a pub, but if you want craft beer to go and you don't have a growler, this Citgo gas station right in town has an amazing beer selection better than most liquor stores and rivaling even a well-stocked grocery store.
