Food Scene

Restaurante Stop 81. Our highly cherished local, typical Portuguese cafe/bar/restaurant. Ideal for lunch or dinner, especially if you don't want to drive. Inexpensive, but real, fresh, well cooked food. Great for steaks, (the "steak on the stone" is a sight to behold!) but the menu has lots of interesting meals. Always ask Antonio what the Prato de Dia offers. The plate of the day, choose fish or meat, is economical and always very tasty. And Antonio is one of the best hosts in the business! (Not open Sundays)

If using traditional Portuguese establishments is a little daunting, try this lovely restaurant. It's still not touristy, but the menus are translated into a number of languages and maybe more accessible. You will still find lots of locals using it as the food is good home cooked fare, not expensive & always reliable. The owner, Fernando is a true gem and will offer the warmest of welcomes.

A medieval bar & restaurant. Imaginative, well prepared, medieval styled food, great staff, great atmosphere and one of the few places to serve real beer/ale. Try the hidromel, great on a hot day while sitting on the main square in Tomar; but be careful, it's strong! I love the game pie, the merchants spicy lamb or the wild boar. This place is well run, and it really shows. Great if your a tourist, but many locals including us, use it frequently.

Sightseeing

This is a definite "must see" the mighty Castle of the Knights Templar was founded in 1160 and the charola was styled on the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. (The Poor Knights of Christ as they were known became the guardians of the Temple, hence Templar Knights). This is a special place and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Google for more info on this fascinating monument.

Go for a wander through the medieval streets of Tomar and take some refreshment at one of the cafes on the square. Look for the Tuk Tuks run by Luis & Catarina. Don't wonder, just DO IT! They will tailor a trip to your needs. The very best way to see Tomar, in a very informative but still really great fun way to explore places you would never otherwise find. They are one of Tomar's treasures themselves, you will not be disappointed.

Next to the bridge over the beautiful Nabao river is a huge wooden water wheel, previously one of 12 used for irrigation. It does still function, but only on special occasions as a dam needs to be built to channel the river water.

It's a museum of match boxes. Sound weird? Did to me as well before I went. But it's free and utterly charming! Just do it. If in doubt, as I'm sure you will be, find it on trip advisor, and see the comments of other doubters, everybody changes their mind!

Parks & Nature

Ancient woodland in the shadow of the mighty fortress of The Knight Templar. Enter through the grand entrance next to the statue of Henry the Navigator. ( Henry planned the "Age of Discoveries" from the castle here in Tomar) Through the formal gardens and along the paths that criss cross through the woods, you just might stumble upon the charolinha!
