To see a volcano blow its top and a red river of molten lava cascade down its side is to feel the awesome power of the natural world. An unusual experience awaits you at Penshurst. Here you will be transported back thousands of years when volcanoes were erupting right across the Western District and into South Australia. At the Volcanoes Discovery Centre you will find how volcanoes are formed, their geology, their history in the Western District, a video simulation of Mount Rouse erupting, the interaction of Koori people with volcanoes and a section aimed at school children. The highlight is a six minute extravaganza combining high fidelity sound, computer modelling and stunning imagery. It is a fitting culmination to a memorable experience. The Penshurst Volcano Centre is open Friday to Sunday from 10.00 to 4.00, plus public holiday Mondays and school holidays every day. Arrangements for groups outside of these hours can be made. Please contact us.

Not far from Hamilton, it offers a comprehensive, informative and entertaining explanation of the volcanic nature of this area, as the town itself is nestled beside Mt Rouse, a dormant volcano.

The Volcanoes Discovery Centre is located in the middle of the third largest volcanic plain on earth. It has displays of all types of volcanoes, and specific information on volcanic activity in Western Victoria. Through videos and posters the wonder of volcanoes is on show for everyone. A visit to Penshurst should also include a climb of Mount Rouse, our very own dormant volcano.
