At the port of Nafpaktos there are two statues. The one is is dedicated to the memory of the philhellene Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, who took part in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. In this battle he lost his left hand. After this battle he wrote "Don Quixote" masterpiece! The other that is placed on the Castle's Tower is dedicated to George Anemogiannis was born in 1798 on the island of Paxos, which, like the rest of the Ionian Islands, escaped the Ottoman occupation. This did not prevent him, like thousands of other Ionian inhabitants, from taking part in the War of Independence against the Ottomans. The Revolution found him a sailor on the merchant ship "The Allies" from Spetses, owned by Bouboulina Laskarina, with captain Nikola Orloff.
