In an urban mecca like Oakland, it’s amazing to know that this place exists, and that you can hike on an inactive volcano. It’s connected to a vast network of trails, but I usually stick to the Skyline Trail—it’ll take you up into the rolling hills with beautiful vistas, or down through dense jungle-like forestry. It’s the perfect yin and yang. Keep an eye out for a few things: the labyrinth, the poison oak, and the wild cows that you’ll sometimes find on the trail.

A volcano and labyrinths! Just 10 minutes away! Ten million years ago, lava flowed from an active volcano through the hills of the East Bay, with flows reaching from the Inspiration Point of Tilden Park to Moraga. Today, the Round Top volcano-rising 1,763 feet above sea level-is the most prominent characteristic of the Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve. The preserve was dedicated in 1936, and is one of the oldest parks in the East Bay Regional Park District. The area was once the hub of massive quarrying activities, and the preserve today is best known for the enigmatic labyrinths that existed at the bottom of the canyons of the quarry. This 2 1⁄2-mile walk takes you past two of the labyrinths. The preserve is a common dog-walking location, and you'll see several dogs, mostly well-behaved and on leash. There's a fair amount of cows, too, so watch where you step. Round Top, one of the area's highest peaks, is made up of lava and volcanic debris left over from a 10-million-year-old volcano. During the past 10 million years, massive tectonic forces on the Hayward and Moraga earthquake faults uplifted the Berkeley hills, folding bedrock formations and tilting the Round Top volcano complex on its side. Softer sedimentary rock from the Orinda Formation eroded away, exposing the Round Top volcano.
