Although I attended this school, I still think that the old town of Užice is a bigger attraction than it. This medieval fortress is located only about 300 meters away from the elementary school of the same name, whose name it bears. The distance from the city center is about one kilometer, but it is not difficult to reach this fortress on the other side of the hill, via the settlement of Terazije. The stone medieval fortress, built on a cliff above river Djetinja, has been watching Uzice for centuries. The first reliable historical records about the Old Town, as the people of Uzice now call the fortress, date from the 14th century. At that time, the noble family Vojinovic was mentioned as the owner of that fortified town, from when the road to Bosnia could be seen and defended, and after that family, the powerful Serbian prefect Nikola Altomanović. This fortress, which, for the sake of defense, was difficult to access due to the steep rock and the river on three sides, has been destroyed and re-fortified several times in its history. As a military facility, it was disabled and destroyed because, in 1863, the last Turks were expelled from the city. Today, the Old Town looks incomparably more beautiful, but it is planned to carry out a complete reconstruction of this fortress and to evoke its 18th century appearance. This fortress is one of the most beautiful places in the city of Uzice and it offers an unforgettable view of the city and the city beach.
